Planning a road trip around the US?

Visas4USA have put together a few tips for driving in the US.

If you’re planning a trip to the states and you’re thinking of venturing around a little by car, there are a few tips to remember, especially because there are many road and traffic rules that will be completely different to what you’re used to at home. The main difference will driving on the right hand side of the road as opposed to the left, but we’ve collated a few other tips to make your American road trip that little bit easier!

Travelling through America by car provides you with so much freedom. Stop-off in whichever state takes your fancy, before heading to the next destination and exploring some more. You must note that there are certain minor differences in traffic rules from state to state. America has 50 states, so it’s important that you’re familiar with how the rules of the road differ! Take a peak at the State Traffic and Speed Laws. It’s wise to print this off or maybe take note of the speed limits in the areas you will be travelling through. There are many speed radars spread across many US states, so it’s vital you don’t exceed any speed limits. The maximum driving limit is 65mph.

After you’ve arrived in America, you should first ask yourself whether you’re in a fit state to take to the roads. If you’ve just landed and you’re really tired, it’s worth catching up on some sleep before driving through roads you’re not familiar with – especially if you’re driving on the “wrong” side of the road! Make you are driving with maximum concentration. If you feel like you may forget to drive on the right side of the road, it’s worth leaving a note inside your vehicle where you can see it in order to remind yourself.

In order to drive anywhere in America, you must be 16 years of age or over, although some states don’t allow those under the age of 18 on the roads. Although it is stating the obvious, you must always wear a seatbelt and ensure that all passengers are also wearing a seatbelt. If you’re travelling around the US by motorcycle, always remember to wear your helmet. After all, safety is everything, especially when you are travelling in unfamiliar locations.

All driving laws in the US are strongly enforced and drivers who are caught disobeying these rules will be penalised accordingly.
